Engaging Licensed Workers

Consumers should engage workers licensed by EMA to carry out electrical work or gas service work. Similarly, contractors must engage a licensed cable detection worker to carry out cable detection work, prior to commencing earthworks.

All electrical work should be carried out or supervised by a licensed electrical worker. Such electrical work includes new wiring, rewiring and extensions. Before electricity supply is turned on, these works have to be tested and certified safe for use by a licensed electrical worker of the appropriate class.

Related works such as replacement of bulbs, installation of water heaters, electrical equipment or appliances do not require a licensed electrical worker unless wiring works are involved.

Engaging in electrical work without a valid electrical worker licence, or knowingly hiring an unlicensed person for such work is considered an offence.

All gas service work related to piped gas installation or appliances should be carried out by a licensed gas service worker. Such work includes new/replacement of gas installation, and modifications to existing installations. All gas service work must be tested before the piped gas supply can be turned on.

To minimise damages to electricity cables, it is a mandatory requirement to perform cable detection work prior to the commencement of any earthworks. Cable detection work must be carried out by a licensed cable detection worker.

Regulatory Action Against Licensed Workers
